Landshut, which has been the capital of Lower Bavaria since 1839, has accumulated an enviable amount of cultural treasures in the course of its turbulent history. The town was founded in 1204 by Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria and till 1255 the famous Wittelsbach family lived in the local Trausnitz castle which has remained the town´s major sight till the present day.
Landshut boasts a beautiful valley location and features a gothic ground plan with its splendid burgher houses and the Martinskirche with its high tower which appears like a shepherd´s crook. The River Isar connects Landshut and Munich, Bavaria´s former and present capitals which are 70km apart.
Once Landshut hosted the most magnificent festival of the Middle Ages. In 1457, Duke Herzog George the Rich married a Polish princess. The tradition-conscious people of Landhut revive this splendid celebration every 4 years. The entire historic center is taken back to times long past when the town was the capital of Bavaria. The Trausnitz castle reminds us of the golden age of the "rich dukes."
